Otherworld by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller Review

Hey guys,
Today I will be reviewing Otherworld by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller!

Let me start off by saying that within the first twenty pages, I noticed the writing style and I really enjoyed it. I thought that Segel and Miller really mixed their writing well together, and that shows testament to how much they have written together. I also thought that it was interesting to take a main character out of "rich kid suburbia" because you don't see many of those and although the concept at first glance seems very familiar to Ready Player One by Ernest Cline, one of my favorite books, this really sets them apart and the story lines, however they intertwine with the VR aspect in "another world", were completely different.
I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this book, the inside flap is so vague and I didn't want to look up a summary for fear that I would be spoiled, so I went in kind of blind. To my surprise, this book was much more of a mystery, thriller kind of novel which I don't read very often but I did really like.
Initially, I was 60 pages into the book and Otherworld didn't even really play into the story, I didn't know where it would come in or where the story would go. Then it just progressed really fast and hard. It reminded me of deadly road-trip through hell, however they were going through Otherworld on foot. It was so full of mystery, adventure and suspense, it was incredibly hard to put it down.
The story arc was just incredible and it progressed so much. The characters were incredible. Every single person in the story had a purpose and had a reason for being there.

SMALL SPOILER SECTION! SKIP IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOK YET

There were so many twists and turns in this book, I couldn't keep my head straight. I loved how Wayne played into it all and also Marlow. I knew that there was a reason why Busara was introduced but I had no idea that she would actually be the one to give Simon his disk and the reason why. Also that her dad is still alive, I somewhat knew that that was going to happen, it was imminent after we found out that she didn't actually see her father die. I'm not sure what else I wanted to talk about in this spoiler section so this part is done.

SMALL SPOILER SECTION IS OVER! RESUME READING IF YOU SKIPPED!

I really, really enjoyed this book, but I don't think it actually hit that 5 yellow rose level so I think I have to give it something good, but not perfect, just because it didn't have that AHA factor.

I rate this book 4.5 out of 5 yellow roses!

Thanks for reading,

Delaney M.
