Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett Review

Hi guys, I am really excited to be sharing with you my newest book review for Serious Moonlight by Jenn Bennett!

I got this book at an amazon bookstore down in Austin Texas over a year and a half ago. I hadn't heard anything about it, or much about Jenn Bennett at all, but I will never be more grateful for finding this book on the shelves. It's been sitting in my unread stack of books for a long time and I just didn't pick it up. Now I think to myself how foolish i was not to. I feel like a lot of the time, books will start off slow and I will say something like “I don't know if I'm gonna like this", or “I hope this picks up and becomes more interesting to me”. But that was not the case with this book. Every single page of this book had my heart. In the very beginning I looked up at my boyfriend and I know that I got that smile on my face like I always do when I fall in love with a book. Because this was spectacular from start to finish. The plot was constantly moving and the romance between Birdie and Daniel was so dynamic and seemed just so REAL. This book will give you that tight feeling in your chest when you are just waiting, wondering, what is going to happen next and just hope for the best for the characters. I have never read a story like this and I doubt I ever will. The closest thing to it that I can personally think of is Thanks for the Trouble by Tommy Wallach, but in actuality, the two books are not much alike at all. The mystery element of finding Raymond Darke, and what his dealings were, was amazing. The entire family dynamic of Birdie especially, as well as Daniel (I loved Jiji), made it feel like you knew how they felt with the relationships between family members. I think part of what made this such a good book is because it dealt with real topics and real reactions that would happen in a young relationship. This basis of sex is not one that you typically see in YA books and I think Bennett handled it incredibly well. I could completely understand Birdie's character and see the reasons why she did certain things. I liked the inclusion of her disability because I feel like narcolepsy is not addressed very much in literature. I understood why she denied it for the entire time and it makes sense based on how her grandfather was diagnosed. I don't think there is a part of this book that I can judge negatively to be completely honest. It was raw and beautiful and made my heart fill up and also made me want to cry and I felt oh so invested in every character's well-being. Plus, I have never wanted to try a slice of pie more than I have while reading this book.
